Homemade Sesame Seed Buns Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F / 45°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Mix the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Add the egg, softened butter, and the activated yeast mixture.
    • Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
    • Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
  4. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Buns:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions.
    • Shape each portion into a smooth ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Lightly flatten each ball to form a bun shape.
  6. Second Rise:
    • Cover with a cloth and let the buns rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Egg Wash & Sesame Seeds:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Brush the tops of the buns with an egg yolk and milk mixture.
    • Sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
  8. Bake:
    • Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
    • Let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
