A rich tapestry of flavors, boasting fresh herbs, garlic, and the vibrant taste of ripe tomatoes. This versatile sauce is a staple in Italian kitchens and can transform any meal into an unforgettable experience.
Ingredients
Scale:
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 cans (28 ounces each) of whole peeled tomatoes
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 cup red wine (optional, for depth of flavor)
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a spicy kick)
Instructions
Gather all your ingredients, ensuring everything is prepped before you start cooking.
In a large saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil. Heat until shimmering, but not smoking.
Add the minced garlic and finely chopped onion to the pan. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onion is translucent.
If using canned tomatoes, crush them gently as you add them to the pan. If using fresh tomatoes, chop them into smaller pieces.
Add sugar, salt, black pepper, chopped basil, and oregano. If using, pour in the red wine and red pepper flakes.
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for about 30-45 minutes.
After simmering, taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as necessary.
Just before serving, stir in any remaining fresh basil leaves.
